第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

My daughter, Emma (in the 7th grade), started back to school last week. She told me a boy named Jake who suffers from an eating disorder and is extremely overweight. As you might expect, he is the center of many jokes. Jake gives the impression that he's not nice to other people as well mostly because of the fact that he's constantly picked on.
For several nights this week Emma came home from school upset about the fact that Jake gets picked on so much. She also mentioned that he had no school supplies as his family could not afford them. He constantly would be asking to borrow paper which just gives kids even more reason to pick on him.
One night Emma was extremely upset about this situation, not only because Jake was picked
on but that he also had no supplies. We sat together that evening and discussed the situation in great detail. We devised a plan for Emma to engage Jake in a conversation and to ask Jake what he needed for supplies—with her telling him that she had extra supplies she would like to share.
The next day, Emma spent some time with Jake and really came to realize that this young man had a heart of gold, but rarely was able to show because he was always on the defensive. Emma asked Jake to make a list of the supplies that he needed. He put together a small list, 3 ring binders, paper, pens, pencils and a pencil sharpener. Emma told him she would help and he was most appreciative.
That evening Emma and I bought everything on his list. When we got home, we put all the supplies into a brand new grey back pack—for Jake did not have a back pack either.
The next day, I brought the bag to the school principal and asked the principal to give the bag to Jake discreetly (谨慎地) so that he did not have to feel embarrassed.
Later that day I picked Emma after school and she was all smiles. The principal had called Jake down to his office and gave him the bag. Jake read the little note that Emma put in hoping that he got all he needed and to enjoy the supplies. As Jake walked into the classroom—he winked at Emma and later thanked her very much for all the stuff—he loved it.
Emma explained to me, that it was so cute to see him take out his new pencil box and to start arranging his pencils and pens. He seemed very happy.
( )56. What do we know about Jake from the first paragraph?
A. He is tall, strong and easy-going.
B. He is fond of playing tricks on his classmates. C. He is always laughed at by his classmates. D. He doesn't like to talk to his friends.
( )57. According to the passage, Emma was ________ about Jake's situation. A. sorrowful B. concerned C. optimistic D. pleased ( )58. Why did Emma talk to Jake the next day?
A. She meant to offer him some advice. B. She hoped to know more about him.
C. She expected to make friends with him. D. She wanted to find out what he needed. ( )59. What is the passage mainly about? A. A mother's love. B. An act of kindness.
C. Emma's school life. D. Jake's situation at school.

Malaria is one of the deadliest global diseases, particularly in Africa. For years, researchers have been working to develop a vaccine against it.
The World Health Organization says the number of people who died of malaria has fallen by twenty-five percent since 2000. Yet the disease killed about six hundred fifty-five thousand people in 2010. Scientists say malaria-carrying mosquitoes cannot travel far on their own. But the insects can, and to, catch rides in the belongings of people who travel. Malaria also can be spread by people who come from an area with large numbers of malaria cases. They may show no signs of having the disease themselves.
That is what Harvard University researchers discovered in Kenya. They found that the disease mainly spreads east from the country's Lake Victoria area with people who travel to the capital, Nairobi. The finding was based on the mobile phone records of fifteen million Kenyans. Caroline Buckee is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Harvard school. She says one of the first steps in stopping malaria is to learn how human travel might be adding to its spread. She says it has been difficult to follow large population movements with methods like government survey of a population.
“But mobile phones offer a really unique way, on an unprecedented range to understand how a whole population is moving around.”
In Kenya, the researchers guessed the distance and length of each phone user's trip away from home. This information was based on messages to and from the mobile phone carrier's twelve thousand transmission towers. The researchers then compared that information to a map showing reports of malaria in different parts of the country. The researchers guessed each user's probability of being infected in a given area. They also guessed the likelihood that a visitor to that area would become infected. The result was a picture showing malaria transmission routes starting in Lake Victoria. Caroline Buckee says such evidence could influence malaria control efforts.
“One thing that you could consider is sending text messages to people coming to high risk cell towers, for example, reminding them to use a bed net. And I think those types of approaches are simple but they would hopefully target people who have no symptoms and awareness of carrying parasites(寄生物).”
She also says researchers are investigation using mobile phone records in other areas to help identify malaria transmission routes.
( )63. According to the passage, malaria is mainly spread by ________. A. luggage B. mosquitoes C. vehicles D. mobile phones
( ). Based on the research result, people who are going to Lake Victoria will probably ______.
A. carry as few belongings as possible B. receive the warning from the WHO C. know how to avoid being infected D. keep the mobiles power on all the time

Mr. Helton was the closest mouthed fellow Mr. Thomson had ever met up with all his day. The first day Mr. Helton was hired to work for Thomson's family, they tried, at the dinner table after work, to engage Mr. Helton in conversation, but it was a failure. They tried first the weather, and then the crops and then the cows, but Mr. Helton simply did not reply. Mr. Thomson then told something funny he had seen in town. It was about some of the other old farmers, friends of his, giving beer to a goat, and the goat's following behavior. Mr. Helton did not seem to hear. Mrs. Thomson laughed dutifully, but she didn't think it was funny. She had heard it often before, though Mr. Thomson, each time he told it, pretended it had happened that same day. It must have happened years ago if it ever happened at all, and it had never been a story that Mrs.Thomson thought suitable for mixed company. The whole thing came of Mr. Thomson's weakness for drinking too much now and then. She passed the food to Mr. Helton, who took every serving of all the foods, but not much, not enough to keep him up to his full powers if he expected to go on working the way he had started.
At last he took a fair-sized piece of cornbread, wiped his plate up as clean as if it had been licked up by a dog, stuffed his mouth full, and, still chewing, slid off the bench and started for the door,
“Good night, Mr. Helton,” said Mrs. Thomson, and the other Thomsons took it up. “Good night, Mr. Helton!”
“Good night,” said Mr. Helton's voice from the darkness. “Gude not,” said, Arthur, imitating Mr. Helton. “Gude not,” said Hert, the copy-cat.
“You don't do it right,” said Arthur. “Now listen to me. Guuuuuuude, naht.” Herbert almost went into a fit with joy.
“Now stop that,” said Mrs. Thomson. “He can't help the way he talks. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves, both of you, making fun of a poor stranger like that. How'd you like to be a stranger in a strange land?”
“I'd like it”, said Arthur.“I think it would be fun.”
“They're both regular_heathens,_Ellie. We've got to raise them. We can't just let them grow up wild.” said Mr. Thomson. He turned the face of awful fatherhood upon his young. “You're both going to get sent to school next year, and that'll knock some sense into you!”
“It's no use picking on them when they're so young and tender.” She went on in another tone. “That Mr. Helton seems all right, even if he can't be made to talk. I wonder how he comes to be so far from home.”
( )67. What did Mrs. Thomson think about her husband's telling the funny story to Mr. Helton?
A. Her husband did a right thing to interest Mr. Helton. B. It was not proper to tell such a story to a stranger. C. The story was funny enough to attract Mr. Helton. D. It was her duty to laugh in the presence of a strager. ( )68. From the passage, we can infer that ________. A. Mr. Helton was a quiet and unhappy man
B. Mr. Hetlon worked hard before coming for dinner
C. Mr. Thomson would be very kind to Mr. Helton D. Mrs. Thomson didn't like Mr. Helton's accent
( )69. The expression “regular heathens” in the passage indicates that Mr. Thomson was ________.
A. angry with their children's behavior B. eager to send their children to school
C. disappointed at his children's school education D. confident school would change their children
( )70. At the end of the passage Mrs. Thomson returned to the topic about Mr. Helton because she was ________.
A. interested in Mr. Helton's pronunciation
B. worried about her difficulties in communication C. curious about Mr. Helton's coming from far away D. trying to change her husband's emotion
Self-Regulated Learning
Today, people change jobs an average of seven times before they retire. Many of these career changes require new learning that must be self-initiated and self-directed. Thus, one goal of teaching is to free students from the need for teachers, so they can continue to learn independently throughout their lives. That is, to make them self-regulated learners. Self-regulated learners have a combination of academic learning skills and self-control that makes learning easier.
What influences self-regulated learning? Knowledge, motivation and will-power combine to influence self-regulated learning.
First of all, self-regulated learners have knowledge about themselves. For example, they know their preferred learning styles; what their interests and talents are: and how to take advantage of their strengths. These experts also know quite a bit about the subject being studied—and the more they know, the easier it is to learn more. They understand different learning tasks require different approaches. Further, they have mastered adequate learning strategies and tactics. For example, they know how and when to skim and how and when to read for deep understanding.
Self-regulated learners are motivated by learning itself. They find many tasks in school interesting because they value learning, not just performing well in the eyes of others. However, knowledge and motivation are not always enough. Self-regulated learners need will-power. They won't give up easily. They know how to protect themselves from distractions—for example, what to do when attracted to stop working and have a cup of coffee.
A model of self-regulated learning. Phi Winne and Allyson Hadwin put forward a 4-stage model.
1. Analyzing the learning task. Learners examine whatever information they think is relevant in order to construct a sense of what the task is about, what resources are available, and how they feel about the work to be done.
2. Setting goals and devising plans. What goals for studying might you set for a quiz covering
only one chapter that counts just 3% toward your grade? Would you goals change if the test covered the last six chapters and counted 30% toward your course grade? Your goal in turn affects the shape of your plans for how to study. Is cramming(突击学习) the best approach? Is it a better plan to study a half-hour each day?
3. Enacting tactics and strategies to accomplish the task. Learners put their tactics and strategies into practice and monitor how well the plan is working. Are you reaching your goals? Is your progress rate fast enough to be prepared for the test?
4. Regulating learning. Learners have to decide whether changes are needed in any of the three preceding stages. For example, if learning is slow:Do you need to review some prior material that provides foundations for the content you are now studying?
Teaching toward self-regulated learning. To develop students' self-regulated learning ability, teachers should let students take an active part in finishing complex meaningful tasks; provide them control over their learning processes and products; involve students in setting criteria for evaluating their learning processes and products, then give them opportunities to make judgments about their progress using those standards.

As is shown in the picture, standing beside a bike is a boy with a piece of paper in his hand. He wants to leave a note to the owner of the car to apologize for his scratching the car.
This picture vividly reflects a phenomenon where our society is in bad needs of honesty. Nowadays, people, troubled with masses of dishonest behaviors, are unwilling to trust others, which causes disagreements and conflicts. Luckily, it has aroused wide public concern and firm steps have been taken to end this unhealthy trend.
On my note, the boy has set a good example to the public, for which he should be highly praised. After all, considered as a virtue, honesty deserves our admiration and is also what we need to deal with troubles in life and create a harmonious society. As a saying goes, honesty is the best policy.

M:Hey, Ann! I haven't seen you for a while! What have you been doing with yourself?
W:Oh, hi, Nick! I've been studying a lot lately. All of my classes seem to have exams during the same week.
M:Oh, that's too bad! Where are you going now?
W:I'm heading to the gym. I've been sitting at my desk all day and I need some exercise. Do you want to walk over there with me?
M:Actually, I'm on my way back from the gym. I just had swim practice and now I am going to dinner.
W:Well, I guess I'll see you around.
M:Hey, why don't we meet at the dining hall tomorrow for lunch? We can just relax and talk a bit.
W:OK. What time?
M:How about one o'clock?
W:Sounds great. I'll see you there. Text 8
M:I was half an hour late for work today. There was just too much traffic.
W:Yes, there really are too many cars on the road. More people need to carpool. M:Carpool?
W:Yeah, you know, a group of people that ride to work together in one car. M:Hey, that's a good idea. How do you join a car pool?
W:Well, there is a special phone number you can call. You leave a message with your address and phone number, and then someone calls you back with the names and phone numbers of the other people in your area who want to carpool.
M:That's really a great idea! How do you know so much about this car pool system, Nancy? W:Me? I called the number for the first time about five years ago. Carpooling is a great way to go to work.

M:Have you heard that famous speech by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez? W:What is it?
M:Only education will lift Latin America out of poverty.
W:When and where did he make the speech? M:In the southern city of Cuzco, where he was attending a conference on December 10th. 1,700 students were present. He told the students to read Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Miserables to understand poverty.
W:Hugo Chavez must think highly of that novel.
M:Yes, he said he was reading the novel for the second time. He was impressed by its description of human misery. But he truly believes that poverty in Latin America will eventually be eliminated.
Text 10
It was late at night. The traffic in the city was usually bad at that time. Miss Brown really wanted to get to her friend's house on time, but she was afraid that she wouldn't make it because it was raining, and the traffic was worse than usual. To make it worse, Miss Brown had rather bad eyesight, but she didn't wear glasses anymore because she thought she didn't look good in glasses. She kept trying to read the road signs as she drove, but she just could not see them. Finally she decided that she needed to make some changes if she was to arrive safely. First, she started to drive more slowly. Second, she turned on the radio so that she would not feel afraid or alone. Finally, she looked for a hotel near the road. As soon as she saw one, she stopped and got a room for the night. In the morning, Miss Brown drove to her friend's house. The rain had stopped and the traffic was much better. She truly had not wanted to lose time in getting to her friend's house, but she knew that arriving safely was the most important thing. As the saying goes, “Better safe than sorry.”
