The argument whether high grades indicate high ability has lasted for quite a long time. Until now, people will agree that there is some relation between grades and ability , but no one can make sure whether high grades will lead to high ability or not. Some think that grades can reflect students’ ability in their academic pursuit. The higher their grades, the smarter they must be. Otherwise, the system of matriculating will neglect students’ entrance score and the entrance examination will be abandoned. In the competition for grades, it is hard to be a winner and easy to be a loser. Students with high grades are respected.

On the contrary, other people hold different opinions. They think that high grades don’t necessarily mean superior ability. The so called top students sometimes are very low in solving practical problems such as fixing a machine or installing an appliance. They are often called book –worms. However, the so called low students may show their intelligence in a special field. Han Han is an example. He is a senior high school student who cannot pass the examinations in several subjects. But no now doubts his ability in writing.

In my opinion, grades are really important for most students because admission to good schools and colleges as well as successful application for nice jobs depend on good grades. The school admission officers and potential employers use grades to assess students’ abilities. But grades are not the sole criterion for students’ abilities. Academic advancement should be combined with excellent manifestation in practicality. In short, both the mind and the hands should be developed together, so that we not only know how to do the job, but also can do it with our own hands.

2． My View on Campus Violence

It is shocking to notice that extreme violence has occurred with frequency on campus in recent years. Several months ago, a university student hacked some of his classmates to death with a knife. In November this year, a college student from a prestigious university tabbed to death a professor who was preparing for his lecture.

These tragedies seem to be unimaginable when college students are regarded as the elite of the society. Some people claim that the higher education hasn’t attached due importance to moral education of the college students. Others believe that college students are fragile in their internal mind. These opinions do make sense when we take the overloaded pressure imposed on college students into consideration.

In my opinion, it is more important to take measures to avoid such occurrences. Among those solutions, psychological aid is one. Those criminals of the campus may have the experience of being humiliated or facing a lot of pressure. It is through psychological consultation that they can outlet their negative feelings and hence avoid extreme actions.

3. Away from Net-bar Campaign

It has been reported that a middle school in Xuzhou City has recently launched a campaign named “Away from Net-bar”. More than a thousand students have signed for their solemn promise that they will not spend a single minute in the net-bars. With the coming of the summer vacation,

this campaign is especially meaningful for the healthy development of the minors.

The internet has brought people great convenience in getting information, entertaining and contacting each other, and it has also benefited some businessmen, especially the owners of net-bars. While it is true that most net-bars are running legally, it is also true that some are offering unhealthy programs that involve violence and sex content. Since most middle school students are prone to be influenced and they can hardly tell which bar is doing well and which one is not, it is only advisable that they should stay away from all.

Besides, staying away from net-bars is also good to students’ physical health. By passively sitting too long in front of the computer screen, both their eyesight and physique suffer.

Obviously, the Away from Net-bars Campaign is an activity that is worth advocating and it merits other schools’ reference.

4. Why Do Viewers Like Watching Sport Programs

The sport programs have been enjoying a boom among TV viewers. According to the above graph, 78 percent of TV viewers frequently watch sports, which is obviously far ahead of other televised events. News follow second with 68 percent of viewers, compared with 54 percent movies watchers. Documentaries seem preferable among people than the specials do, with 42 percent and 20 percent respectively.

A passion for sports has taken possession of thousands of people. One of the reasons perhaps is that sports provide an outlet for open-up emotions. People extract themselves from routine life and fully express their feelings towards sports. Stimulated by the excitement, they applaud for the victory and hold their breath for the exhilarating competition. In a sense, sports are a heaven for people to escape from boredom and tension.

Enthusiasm for sports also reflects people’s desire to transcend geographical and cultural limits. Freed from border and language difference, sports are accessible to everyone. People will no longer be confined to a certain living circle. They can share the same fantasy with the viewers at another hemisphere. Taken by sports, they can roam from country to country, continent. Sports thus become a common language for all the people throughout the world.

5. Buying and Selling Stocks as a Student

At present, there are many students engaged in buying and selling stocks. Some of them are equipped with updated device so as to get the latest information and seized golden chances for transaction.

People’s opinions vary on this issue. The reasons why some people oppose it are as follows. For one thing, students have to sacrifice their learning hours to focus on stocks, only to fail in exams. For another, students are too inexperienced to make wise investment. Some spend their tuition on stocks. If they fail, they will be under massive financial pressure. But then, supporters believe that stock exchange is a good way to improve students’ ability to manage money as well as a precious chance to put theory into practice.

To my mind, in a world of opportunities and challenges, the stock exchange should not be a

forbidden place for college students. Meanwhile, what they must keep in mind is learning first, for knowledge is most valuable.
