Tourism is often about seeking deeper emotional and personal connections with the world around us. Not all travel experiences, however, need to take place in the real world. With the evolution of virtual reality(VR) technology, tourism will increasingly become a combination of physical and virtual worlds. VR may even remove the need to travel entirely.
But can a VR experience really equal a real world one? Many experts believe it can. Studies have shown that our brains have an inbuilt VR-like mechanism that enables us to live imagined experiences. Much of our waking life is spent thinking about either the past or the future. This is known as\" mind wandering\". During these events we' re not paying attention to the current world around us. Instead, we' re recalling memories, or creating and processing imagined futures.
When engaged in mind wandering, our brains process these mental images using the same pathways used to receive inputs from the real world. So, the imagined past or future can create emotions and feelings similar to how we react to everyday life. VR can create these same feelings.
While critics might argue that a virtual experience will never match reality, there are several ways VR tourism could make a positive contribution. Firstly it could help protect sensitive locations from over-tourism. In recent years famous sites such as Maya Bay in Thailand, and Cambodia's Angkor Wat Temples have had to limit the number of visitors because of their negative impact. These places are now producing their own VR experiences that will allow tourists to pass through virtual models of the sites.
Virtual reality may also allow people back in time, to experience historical events, visit ancient cities, and even to walk among dinosaurs.
Finally, in a world where many people suffer from stress and depression due to overwork, virtual tourism may provide a cheap and convenient way for people to take brief holidays to otherwise unreachable destinations and recharge their batteries, without ever leaving their homes.
It sounds like science fiction but it's already happening. As virtual technology improves and as people continue to demand new and interesting experiences, expect more virtual tourism, both in combination with the real world and instead of it.
4. What is driving the development of virtual tourism? A. Companies seeking to make more money. B. Improvements in virtual reality technology. C. People's demand for more shared experiences. D. People's deeper understanding of the physical world. 5. Which of the following best describes \"mind wandering\"? A. The brain processes which help people think VR is real. B. The way the brain processes inputs from the real world. C. Brain activities focusing on past or future events. D. Experiences coming from a person's imagination.
6. What does the underlined word \"it\" in the last paragraph refer to? A. Science fiction. B. Virtual technology. C. Virtual tourism. D. The real world.
7. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To describe the advantages of VR tourism. B. To give suggestions for reducing over-tourism. C. To encourage people to develop VR technology. D. To argue VR tourism will replace the real world travel.

Scott and Daniel Harry are enjoying everyday tasks like shopping and washing for the first time following their move to an accommodation (住宿) support house in Kurwongbah, north of Brisbane last year.
Disability Services Queensland’s Strengthening Non-Government Organisations project provided an accommodation support model that would enable residents (居住者) like Daniel and Scott to live more independently.
The house is just one of many accommodation support services funded (资助)through the project. The five-bedroom house provides 24-hour care for up to four individuals with complex needs, including medical support. Care and staffing levels are varied and flexible, depending on each resident’s requirements.
Scott and Daniel, who have a severe form of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, require 24-hour support in all
activities of daily living. Before they moved to the house, they lived with their family. Scott says living at home was difficult as it placed a physical and emotional strain(负担) on their parents who had to wake them several times each night to reposition them or place them on breathing machines.
“We were heavyhearted,” says Scott, who is planning to write a book about his life experiences. “But our parents now have a lot moretime for themselves. We now manage ourselves on a day-to-day basis.”
Daniel is an enthusiastic gardener, taking care of his own vegetable garden. The men share the house with one other young man, and they go to rugby league games, meeting up with friends.
Leeding Care Australia provides the care service at Kurwongbah. Manager Lee Garniss says setting up the facilities (设施) has not been without its challenges.
“It is an unconventional model of care,” Lee says. “The home is Scott and Daniel’s home, however it is also a workplace for their support staff. Balancing these two requirements has been a challenge for all.”
“We have experienced a bit of a learning phase over the last twelve months. However, by working as a team we try our best to meet the needs of both residents and staff and I think we have achieved the right balance.” 8. What do we know about the house Scott and Daniel live in now? A. It was built by their parents. B. It can accommodate four residents. C. It belongs to a governmental project. D. It’s located in the center of Brisbane.
9. Why did Scott and Daniel’s parents wake up frequently at night?
A. To help them do exercise. B. They were making a lot of noise. C. To check on their breathing. D. They were under emotional pressure. 10. How did Scott feel while living with his parents? A. A bit guilty. B. Quite happy. C. Very proud. D. Slightly angry. 11. What was a challenge while setting up the facilities? A. Lack of fund. B. No workplace.
C. Inexperienced staff members. D. Satisfying both staff and residents’ needs.

Mikah Frye, a 9-year-old boy, was walking down the streets with his grandmother discussing Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold night. Then he was thinking about a way
to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas.
That thought stayed in Mikah Frye’s mind and when he reached home, Mikah informed his parents not to buy the Microsoft XBox gaming device he had asked for earlier. Mikah realized that by not buying the $300 device, he could instead donate over 30 blankets to the homeless. He knew how much it meant to be warm in the cold holiday season.
Three years ago, Mikah and his parents were the ones living in a homeless shelter. Having suffered a financial crisis, they too had lost their house, not knowing where their next meal would come from and sharing a blanket every night. Mikah was six years old then but he remembered what it was like to have to give back that precious blanket every morning.
Reaching out to the emergency shelter programme that looked after them 3 years ago, the family donated 60 blankets in the end, each with a personalized message of hope in Mikah’s handwriting stating: “They gave me a blanket, but I had to leave it. That’s why I want you to have your own blanket. Today, I live in my own house, and someday you will too. Your friend, Mikah.”
The homeless people at the shelter may not have been able to give Mikah a Christmas gift in return but his gesture was noted by the billion dollar company Microsoft who made sure that Mikah was fooled into visiting their store so that Santa Claus could personally deliver an XBox from the company to him as a reward for making the top of “Santa’s list of nice boys” that year. 12. Why did Mikah give up his Christmas gift?
A. The device was out of date. B. His parents had a tight budget.
C. He wanted to spend a warm Christmas. D. He decided to do something charitable. 13. What made Mikah have a better understanding of the situation of the homeless? A. His own experience. B. His parents’ education.
C. His visiting to the emergency shelter. D. The cold weather during the holiday season. 14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. The homeless gave Mikah a gift in return. B. He finally got the gift he wanted on Christmas.
C. The company Microsoft fooled Mikah into buying an Xbox. D Mikah wrote a thank-you note to the emergency shelter he lived in. 15. What might be the best title for the text? A. Mikah’s Precious Christmas Gift
B. Mikah’s Giving Warmth on Christmas C. Microsoft Rewarded Nice Boys on Santa’s List D. The Homeless Needed Blankets on a Cold Christmas 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs — one for Dad, one for Mom, and one for me. In the cellar (地窖), the very last jar of apple jam lay quietly on the shelf, waiting to be turned into an apple pie when Dad came back. Mom sat at one end of the table. I sat in the middle between her and Dad. I tried not to look at Dad’s empty place. Dad had gone to the city to look for work for a long time.
Every night, I lay awake in bed and waited for the train to stop. Waited to hear the creaky (嘎吱作响的) gate Dad’s going to fix when he came home. Waited to hear the sound of his work boots dropping on the step by the kitchen door, and his voice calling, “I’m home!”
Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Mom made from empty flour sacks (麻布袋).
Every night, Mom came to kiss me good-night — after the train’s gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your dad will be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
Time dragging by, it finally came the day before Thanksgiving. I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”
Early the next morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Dad lifted me onto
his shoulders and pretended to stagger from my weight. “How’s my boy? You’ve gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”
He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR — I knew that word. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Dad whistled admiringly and winked at me. Mom and I had been practicing my letters most days. I could see that Mom was pleased with me. “I’m going to bake a pie for your dad’s homecoming dinner. Jimmy, bring me that jar of apple jam from the shelf in the cellar.” Mom smiled at me.
