35.By some people I mean me. Why is it that an evening stroll(散步) leaves me feeling eaten alive while my companions are left blissfully un-bitten? Studies suggest that about 20 percent of people arehigh attractor types who are especially appealing to the female mosquitoes(蚊子) seeking out blood for the extra protein(蛋白质) they need to lay eggs. Of course, not all mosquitoes are the same. But let’s consider some of the more general properties that affect your mosquito appeal. Clothing Color

It’s true, mosquitoes have discerning(有辨识能力的) fashion taste.Or at least, they’re more likely to spot you as a target if you stand out from your environment. Dark colors, especially, will attract more of the insect. Body Heat

Visual clues allow the mosquito to locate you from relatively far away, but as she approaches, it’s your body heat that draws her in. This puts pregnant women, who average about 1.26 degrees Fahrenheit(华氏温度) warmer than others, at a particular risk—a fact which has been substantiated(证实) by a number of studies. Carbon Dioxide

This is another reason pregnant women are at a disadvantage. Mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide using a special organ called a maxillary palp(下颚须) from as far as 164 feet away. Unfortunately for mothers-to-be, pregnancy causes women to emit 21 percent more CO2. This is also why kids are often safe from bites, when bigger, more CO2-emitting adults are around. Alcohol Intake

On the flip side(另一方面), pregnant women are(presumably) avoiding another mosquito attractor: alcohol. Although it’s unclear how mosquitoes go about detecting the presence of ethanol(乙醇), studies show that drinking even just 12 ounces of beer will significantly increase the attention you receive from the pests.

The Properties of Your Skin and Sweat

Up to 85 percent of your susceptibility(敏感性) to mosquito bites has

nothing to do with what you’re drinking, wearing or how much heat your body emits—it’s just genetic.Specifically, the composition of your skin bacteria—the kind that naturally and healthily exists there—can serve as an attractor. Blood Type

Another factor you can’t control? Your blood type. And it stands to reason that, if the mosquito is there to suck your blood, she cares what kind she’s getting. People with blood type O are more prone to mosquito bites than those with type B, with type A folks bringing up the rear

According to the author, which factor below serves as the most influencing one in mosquito appealing()

38.Passage 4

University of Maryland student Ben Simon and his friends couldn't stand seeing good food thrown out on their campus. We basically noticed that some of the extra food from the dining hall was going to be wasted at the end of the day. And we met with the dining services and asked them whether it would be okay if instead of throwing out the food, they let us donate it. And they were on board, he said.

So 18 months ago, the students began what they call the Food Recovery Network. Each night, volunteers would show up at a campus dining hall to pick up leftovers and deliver them to local shelters and food banks. So far,

they have donated more than 23,000 kilos of food that would otherwise have been thrown out.

Nationwide, 165 billion dollars'worth of food is wasted each year, according to the National Resources Defense Council. Spokesman Bob Keefe says that is about 40% of the country's entire food production. If we can reduce our waste in this country by 15%, we can feed 25 million hungry Americans. That is a huge benefit. That is what programs like the Food Recovery Network are doing. he said.

Christian Life Center is one of the beneficiaries(受益者) of the students'efforts. Ben Slye, the senior pastor, said, It has been just amazing to see these students take their own time, their own vehicles and gas money and be able to make an effort like this. Each week we are able with this food probably to feed over a hundred people.

The University of Maryland's Food Recovery Network now has 200 volunteers and the program has expanded to 18 schools across the country. I want to grow 18 chapters(地方分会) to a thousand chapters within five years. And once we make the Food Recovery Network spread on college campus in America, we want to expand to restaurants and farms. said Simon. The volunteers are committed to making that happen The dining services in University of Maryland() A.threw out good food on campus B.supported the volunteers'job

C.enjoyed the talk with the students D.donated their leftovers to the poor

39.Passage Two

A large, detached(独立的) house not only ensures privacy. It is also a status symbol. The magnificent home is set in a big garden. Of course, this kind of house is an unrealistic dream for most people. But even a small detached house, surrounded by a garden, gives the required suggestion of rural life which is dear to the hearts of many British people. Most people would be happy to live in a cottage(村舍), and if this is a thatched(茅草屋顶的) cottage, suggestive of a pre-industrial age, so much the better.

Most people try to avoid living in a block of flats(what the Americans call apartment blocks). Flats, they feel, provide the least amount of privacy. With a few exceptions, mostly in certain locations in central London, flats are the

cheapest kind of home. The people who live in them are those who cannot afford to live anywhere else.

The dislike of living in flats is very strong. In the 1950s millions of poorer people lived in old, cold, uncomfortable nineteenth century houses, often with only an outside toilet and no bathroom. During the next twenty years many of them were given new high-rise blocks of flats to live in which, with central heating and bathrooms, were much more comfortable and were surrounded by grassy open spaces. But people hated their new homes. They said they felt cut off from the world with all those floors up. They missed the neighborliness. They couldn't keep a watchful eye on their children playing down there in those lovely green spaces. The new high-rise blocks quickly got broken. The lifts didn't work. The corridors were dark. Windows were damaged and were not repaired. There was graffiti all over the walls British people prefer()
