Connectivity Engine VCE405Technical DataThe VCE405 Connectivity Engineprovides a flexible off-the-shelfmethod for quickly developingand deploying cost-conscioushigh performance custom sys-tems.The low power consumption ofthe powerful, 375+ MIPS, IBMPowerPC 405GP and the ALMA2PCI/VME bridge make theVCE405 well-suited to criticalenvironments such as medicalor aerospace applications.transfer overhead and minimizes pipelinestalls to greatly improve performance.The general architecture of the 405GPconsists of a 64-bit, 133MHz ProcessorLocal Bus (PLB) and a 32-bit, 44MHzOn-Chip Peripheral Bus (OPB).High performance peripherals attach tothe PLB and less performance-criticalperipherals attach to the OPB.8MB Flash EPROMIn addition, the board provides oneFLASH memory array which is composedof two, equal-sectored, Intel 28F320-J5a-110, 2M x16 Flash EPROM's for atotal of 8MB. Each EPROM has thirty-two, 128kB blocks, but since theEPROM's are concatenated to form a32-bit data path, the paired EPROMblock size is 256kB. Thales Computersuses the lowest addressed blocks for itstest and boot software, and for storingthe EPROM's programming algorithm.These blocks are then locked into thearray so they cannot be accidentallyerased or overwritten. The FlashEPROM array may optionally be populat-ed with Intel 28F640J5a-120 (4M x16)devices to provide 16MB respectively.➜Real Time ClockThe Real Time Clock (RTC) function isprovided by a Dallas SemiconductorDS1602 Elapsed Time Counter. Thisdevice can keep track of over 125 yearsworth of seconds in each of its 32-bitcounters. One counter runs continuous-ly. The other counter counts secondsonly while +5V is active. Software candetermine how long the RTC has beenrunning on battery power by subtractingthe VCC active counter from the contin-uous counter.UVEPROM socketThe board also provides a 32 pin DIPsocket for a 27C801 8Mbit (1MB)UVEPROM. The UVEPROM may be usedto provide the initial boot code for theFlash EPROM and then be removed.➜PowerPC 405GPThe IBM PowerPC 405GPTMis a 32-bitRISC embedded controller. High per-formance and peripheral integration ofthe 405GP make the device ideal forwired communications and other perva-sive computing applications.The 405GP is powered by a PowerPC405B3 embedded core. This core tight-ly couples a 266MHz CPU, MMU,instruction and data cache (16kB I-cache; 8kB D-cache), and debug logic.This finely-tuned core reduces data➜Memory64 or 128MB SDRAM The system memory consist of twobanks of 32MB or 64MB each makingrespectively 64MB or 128MB of syn-chronous DRAM with Error Control andCorrection. TheEEPROM hooks directly to thePPC405GP IIC bus lines.➜Ethernet InterfaceThe board provides 100Base-TXEthernet, with auto-negotiation to10Base-T when connected to networksnot capable of 100Mbps operation.Ethernet support through the MediaAccess Control (MAC) layer is providedin the PPC405GP chip. The PhysicalLayer Device (PHY) and the PhysicalMedium Dependent sub-layer and inter-face (PMD) are provided on board. Theconnections between the MAC and thePHY conform to the MediumIndependent Interface (MII) specification.The supported media is Category 5Unshielded Twisted Pair cable (UTP),accessed via an RJ-45 connector on thefront panel (convection cooled).The Ethernet media access con-troller of the PPC405GP is ageneric implementation of theEthernet Media Access Control(MAC) protocol complying withANSI/IEEE Std 802.3 and IEEE 802.3usupplement.
