You may not realize it, but you do it all the time. That is, begin with the end in mind. You draw up a plan before you build a house. You read instructions before you make a cake. You create an outline before you write a paper. It’s part of life.

Let’s have a begin-with-the-end-in-mind experience by using your imagination. Find a place where you can be alone. First, clear your mind. Don’t think about anything else. Then breathe deeply, and open your brain wide. Now, let’s come to the key part of the experience. In your mind, picture someone walking toward you about half a block away. At first you can’t see who it is. As this person gets closer and closer, you suddenly realize, believe it or not, it’s you. But it’s not you today, it’s you as you’d like to be one year from now. Now think deeply. Ask yourself the following questions:

What have you done with your life over the past year? How do you feel inside? What do you look like? Has your personality grown? Remember, this is you as you would like to be one year from now.

You can go back to reality (现实) now. If you actually tried this, you probably got in touch with your deeper self. You got a feel for what’s important to you and what goals (目标) you’d like to achieve next year.

________ First, you’re at important crossroads in life, and the paths you choose now can influence you forever. Second, if you don’t decide your own future, someone else will do it for you.

As Li Ping, a middle school student in Shanghai, discovered beginning with the end in mind is a powerful way

to help turn your dreams into realities:

When I feel stressed, I’ve found it really helps me. I go someplace where I can be alone, and try to see the whole picture of my dream life—and then I begin to think about what I need to get there. This method started when I was a ninth grader, and today I’m making some of those pictures in mind become a reality.11. Why does the writer mention the examples in Paragraph 1?A. To explain making preparations is important.B. To show making preparations is a part of life.C. To teach people how to make daily preparations.D. To show how much one loves making preparations.

12. What’s the most important part of the begin-with-the-end-in-mind experience?A. Finding a quiet place and clearing your mind.C. Imagining a younger self walking towards you.

B. Taking a deep breath and opening your mind.D. Picturing what you want to achieve in the future.

13 Which of the following is the most suitable for the ________ in Paragraph 5?

.A. What can you do to realize your dream?B. How can we start to have an end in mind?C. Why is it important to have an end in mind?D. Who is going to help you choose paths in life?14. Which idea will Li Ping probably agree with?A. Having an end in mind helps you achieve a goal.B. Staying alone can help you deal with your stress.C. Imagining a dream life is a way to relax your mind.D. Creating a plan is the easiest way to realize your dream.

That night we cooked goat’s meat on the fire and drank wine from the Hispaniola. I was happy to be with my friends again. Long John Silver smiled and poured wine for everyone.

The next morning, we started to move the treasure from the cave to the Hispaniola. We didn’t see the mutineers (叛变者). It took two days to get all that treasure onto the ship, but finally it was done. On the third day we left some food, guns, and medicines on the beach for the three pirates. We had decided to leave them on the island, it wasn’t safe to take them with us on the ship.

We then went on board the Hispaniola and sailed out of the northern harbour. We sailed to the nearest port in

South America. When we arrived on land, we were welcomed by the friendly, smiling people. They sold us fruit and vegetables and showed us the town.

The streets were full of light and music! So different from the miserable (痛苦的) island we had just left. We spent the night in the town, leaving Ben Gunn to guard the ship. When we returned the next morning, Ben said, “Silver’s gone! He escaped (逃跑) on a boat last night. He took a bag of coins with him. I’m not sorry! We weren’t safe with Long John Silver on board!”

The next day we hired some sailors from the town and set sail for England. We each got a part of the treasure. I went back to the Admiral Benbow and lived happily with my mother. We hired some people to help us in the inn, so we don’t have to work so hard any more. The squire is living well on his part of the treasure in our old village near Bristol. Gray used his money well! He studied his profession and became first mate on a fine ship. He is now married and the father of a family. Ben Gunn got one thousand pounds and spent it in nineteen days. The squire hired him to work in his great house in the village. The people in the village laugh at him because he spent all that money so quickly, but he doesn’t care. He’s happy working for the squire, and he sings in the village church.

I never heard anything more of Long John Silver. That one-legged sailor disappeared from my life. No doubt he is living happily somewhere with his wife and his parrot Captain Flint. I hope he is enjoying this life, because his possibilities of comfort in the next life are very small.

The latest sports craze is not even a sport. According to a recent article, “e-sports” are attracting a large number of audiences.

In e-sports, players and teams compete in popular video computer games such as Dota 2 and Ovenvatch. Fans fill arenas (竞技场) to watch the action live on huge television screens.

The games have gone way past kids playing against each other while sitting on a sofa at home. The International, a major competition for players of Dota 2, awarded $24 million in prizes, with the winner taking home almost $11 million. A recent e-sports competition attracted more than 80,000 fans to the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, China.

I have to admit that I am not a big fan of computer games. I know that some games can be educational, but I think too many kids spend too much time sitting in front of a screen shooting space aliens. I think it would be better if kids spent more time reading or playing real sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer.

And please don’t tell me that competitive gaming is a real sport because it requires hand-eye coordination(协调). According to my American Heritage Dictionary, a sport is “an activity involving physical effort and skill”. I don’t think anyone works up much of a sweat (汗水) playing video games.

Too often, regular sports send kids a kind of message. Competition starts early, when lots of kids are not ready for the ups and downs of games. Trails and travel teams come next, giving too many kids the message they are “not good” at sports. So lots of kids give up sports and start playing more video games.

Maybe everyone in youth sports, including coaches, parents and kids, should think more about the advantages of real sports.

18. What are “e-sports” according to the text?A. Sports events on television screens.C. Video computer game competitions.19. What might the author think of “e-sports”?A. They are not instructive.C. They should be banned in school.

20. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. To introduce a new kind of sport.

B. They need too much time and money.

D. They have some negative influence on children.B. Easy sports games for kids.D. The latest sports in the Olympics.

.C. To explain the importance of playing sports.

D. To call on people to pay more attention to traditional sports.

21. Where is this text most likely from?A. A guidebook.

B. A magazine.

C. A novel.

D. An advertisement.

“No building comes without carvings (雕刻), and carvings make buildings more valuable,” goes an old saying in Minnan, an area in southern Fujian Province. The saying refers to brick carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.

The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrance of Minnan’s buildings. However, with development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan’s brick carvings have gradually faded (逐渐消失) from sight, said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Fujian’s Quanzhou City.

The 42-year-old has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carving. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation (创新). ①

“Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking,” Wu said. “We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts.” ② People in Minnan love tea so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup

,holders, pot holders and other items. ③ Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow tail ridge (屋脊) and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.

Because of the market’s recognition of his work, Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his pieces, and the popularity of short videos has also given him new hopes of promoting (推广) Minnan brick carvings. ④ The art form originated during the Song Dynasty flourished (繁荣) during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is now an important part of national cultural heritage.

22. What’s the writer’s purpose in mentioning the saying at the beginning?A. To attract more people to visit Minnan.B. To give advice on developing brick carvings.C. To introduce an area in southern Fujian Province.D. To show the importance of brick carvings in Minnan.23. What can we infer (推断) from the sixth paragraph?A. Wu’s most customers came from abroad.B. The pendant of brick carving becomes popular.

C. Wu’s brick pieces are warmly received all over the world.

D. Brick carvings become symbols of homesickness for overseas Chinese.

24. Which is the most suitable place to put the sentence “They have been warmly received by both local people and foreign visitors.”?A. ①

B. ②

C. ③

D. ④

25. What is probably the best title for this passage?A. The history of Minnan’s brick carvingsC. The ancient red brick buildings in Minnan

B. Minnan’s brick carving art is coming backD. An artist with his own style of brick carvings

“First, we threw a stone onto the ice to test it. We thought it would hold our weight. Then we stepped on it,” Cruz said. Anthony went first. He took a few steps, then... He fell through the seemingly frozen ice!

Cruz rushed to help his friend. The lake “ate” him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the freezing

water and onto some ice. He then tried to work his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn’t hold, and he fell in again. This time, he couldn’t get out.

The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their arms and legs. Cruz had a sense that he was going to die.

Anthony’s older sister had seen all this and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby, heard her. He quickly pulled over. He caught a nearby float (浮板), kicked off his shoes. and ran into the water, clearing his way through the ice with his free hand. “It was kind of a ‘Hulk smash’.” Lavin later joked.

Lavin made his way to pull the boys back to land. They were taken to the hospital immediately. The doctor said their five-minute stay in the water made their body temperature drop nearly ten degrees.
