QUICK SET UP OF TESTER

Purpose;

To have a slight drag on the \"flat\" of the Sliding Gage Pin 'F', at the same time that the full weight of the Vertical Shaft 'K' is on the Specimen to be tested.

Process;

Step 1- Jog motor until rocker arm lift cam is at it's lowest position, so as to clear the cam follower bearing.

Step 2- Have the rocker arm setting on the flat of the sliding gage pin 'F'. Step 3- Loosen the Nose Piece Thumbscrew and the Brass Weight screw that holds the Vertical Shaft 'K', then slide the Vertical Shaft 'K', up

and down to get 'O' Ring to rest on the Specimen while the Rocker Arm touches the flat on \"Pin\" 'F'.

Step 4- Re-tighten the Brass Weight Thumbscrew.

Step 5- Turn the Brass Weight fine adjustment screw 'J' until the Rocker Arm has slight drag on the flat of the Pin as you slide the Pin in and out. This will set the Rocker Arm parallel with The Base of the Machine while the load is upon the Specimen.

Step 6- Tighten the Nosepiece thumbscrew against the Vertical shaft to maintain this position.

Step 7- Move the Sliding Gage Pin from under the Rocker Arm before running Tests.

The older style Machines can also be set this way, making the use of the rear Indicator obsolete.

This adjustment will also have to be made if the Specimens are different thickness.

CHECKING HORIZONTAL SLIDING PIN GAUGE 'F' AND CLEARANCE BETWEEN CAM AND CAM FOLLOWER.

1. With Rocker Arm 'H' resting on Sliding Pin Gauge 'F' use a machinist's indicator and surface gauge 'Z' to determine if top of Rocker Arm is parallel to machine's base plate. If not, then correct by moving Sliding Pin's mounting up or down as required. 2. Use Surface Gauge 'Z'.

3. Adjust Indicator to get a reading of \"5\" (Bezel on indicator can be revolved).

4. Stop motor when Cam is almost to lowest point.

5. Hold Rocker Arm up and place 1/8\" Shim Plate 'Y' between Cam & Cam Follower Bearing.

6. Lower Rocker Arm so that Cam Follower rests on shim 'Y' on Cam, then pull the Sliding Gauge Pin out from under Rocker Arm. 7. Jog motor to get very near to lowest point of Cam.

8. Make very short jogs of motor and record smallest indicator reading as the lowest point of Cam passes Indicator. This lowest reading of Indicator should read same as item Number 3 above.

9. If this smallest reading of Indicator doesn't read same as item Number 3 above then move Cam Mount up or down to get the same reading. 10. The above helps assure the accuracy of Machine. Note: It is still necessary to set up specimen accurately. Note: Remove Shim 'Y' before operating machine.

TRACKING OF PAPER AND TAPE

NOTE: Norman Tool, Inc. has found that if the following procedure is used, they have very few problems making the paper and tape track properly.

To check Tester, do the following.

1. Set up for testing, a specimen that has opposite surfaces parallel on the Box Anvil 'P'. Note: A paint chip is good for this.

2. Check thumb screw to be sure screw bears on full flat of vertical shaft, (Use no tools to tighten).

3. Move cam follower off cam as outlined above and on the Continuous Abrading page.

4. Be sure 'N' Frame is secured squarely at lowest position on Vertical Shaft, about 1/8\" above cutout for '0' Ring Assembly. (There is a bump on shaft at this position which is to prevent 'N' frame from falling lower and riding '0' Ring). 5. Start Motor.

6. If paper has too much side flow, loosen thumb screw in 'N' frame very slightly. (there is a brass form fitting plug under thumb screw which could revolve and lose its form fit to vertical shaft - if thumb screw is loosened too much). Now revolve 'N' frame very slightly to right or left to get best paper tracking, and lock screw. NOTE: The 4 nylon bearings in 'N' frame which also confine the edges of paper are set so that paper could move sideways about .008\". If ALL features of Tester are adjusted properly, the paper will fluctuate between the ends of the 2 nylon bearings which are located at the outgoing side of 'N' frame. 7. Check horizontal position of the two reels for alignment with mechanism, if the reel location has been changed.

NOTE The following does not alleviate the necessity of setting up specimen parallel to paper's tangent at '0' Ring.

The radial location of the 'N' frame is adjustable on the vertical shaft, this is to facilitate a very easy and fast method of correcting a slight side flow of paper.

The test area must be parallel to the Horizontal Tangent formed by the paper wrapped around the '0' Ring. Use machinist's indicator surface gauge Z to check X-Y Axis of test area.

It may be necessary from time to time to put the 'N' frame back to its original position as outlined in the above steps.

An immediate and continuous drifting of the paper between the 2\" diameter feed roller and the 2\" diameter spring loaded pressure roller denotes binding of the 'W' pressure roller, or uneven spring pressure (adjustable) on the pressure roller.

An appropriate amount of pressure applied in proper direction to the 1/2\" diameter extension of pressure roller 'W' often is all that is required after starting a new roll of paper. See Page Number 4

USE OF INDICATOR ON THE ABRASION WEAR TESTER

It is advisable for technicians to run some tests as outlined in instruction sheet BEFORE attempting to use (surface gauge 'Z') indicator. OBJECT: The use of the indicator is to overcome the human element of error in setting the 'O' ring (with paper under it) down onto the specimen

accurately, thereby, contributing to more consistent cycle readings. STEP #1: Start Motor and Stop when rocker arm is near lowest position. STEP # 2: Push gauge pin 'F against side of rocker arm.

STEP # 3:Raise rocker arm by hand just enough to slide gauge pin under rocker arm.

The ends of the thumb screw and Allen screw have been surfaced ground square to their axis. These flat ground surfaces MUST be carefully set against flat of vertical shaft.

NOTE: Slightly rock vertical shaft each way to \"feel\" the flats as you tighten screws.

1ST INDICATOR READING: Gauge pin 'F' under rocker arm. O ring with paper NOT resting on specimen.

2ND INDICATOR READING: Vertical shaft adjusted so that O Ring with paper RESTING on specimen. Gauge pin 'F' NOT under rocker arm.

NOTE: The 2nd reading must match (.001\") the 1st reading, if not, use fine adjustment screw 'J' to move vertical shaft up or down on specimen as required.

NOTE: When running specimen test, the Anvil 'X' for indicator should be revolved to a position so that indicator arm does not contact anvil. Failure to do this would subtract approximately 11 grams pressure, thereby affecting accuracy of test.
