Once, when there was a famine (饥荒), a richer baker sent for twenty of the poorest children in the town, and said to them, “In this basket there is a loaf for each of you. Take it, and come back to me every day at this time for more.”
The hungry children gathered eagerly about the basket, and fought over the bread because each wanted the largest loaf. At last they went away without even thanking the good baker.
Gretchen, a poorly dressed little girl did not fight or struggle with the other children, but stood quietly in the distance. When the badly behaved children had left, Gretchen took the smallest loaf, which was all that left in the basket. She kissed baker’s hand and went home.
The next day the children were as badly behaved as before. Gretchen got a loaf almost half the size of the one she got the first day. When she came home, her mother cut the loaf open. Many new shining pieces of silver fell out of it.
Her mother was very worried, and said, “Take the money back to the baker at once. The silver must have fallen into the dough by accident. Be quick, Gretchen.”
When the little girl gave the rich man her mother’s message, he said, “It was no mistake. I had the silver pieces put into the smallest loaf to reward you. Always be as content, peaceable and grateful as you now are. Go home now, and tell your mother that the money is yours to keep.” 61. The reading mainly tells us about ________. In the city of Fujisawa, Japan, lives a woman named Atsuko Saeki. When she was a teenager, she dreamed of going to the United States. Most of what she knew about American life was from the textbooks she had read. “I had a picture of the daddy sitting in the living room, the mommy baking cookies and their teenage daughter off to the movies with her boyfriend.”
Atsuko decided to go to college in California. When she arrived, however, it was not the dream world she had imagined. “People were struggling with problems and often seemed unhappy and too busy,” she said, “I felt very alone.”
One of her most difficult classes was physical education. “We played volleyball,” she said, “The other students were good at it, but I wasn’t.” One afternoon, the instructor had Atsuko hit the ball to her teammates so they could knock it over the net. No big deal for most people, but it terrified Atsuko. She was scared of failing, and that the others would laugh at her.
A young man on her team seemed to understand what she was going through. “He walked up to me and whispered, ‘Come on. You can do that.’”
“You will never understand how those words of encouragement made me feel. Four words: You can do that. I felt like crying with happiness. “She made it through the class. Perhaps she thanked the young man; she can’t remember.
Six years have passed. Atsuko is 27 years old and back in Japan, working as a salesclerk. “I have never forgotten the words,” she said, “When things are not going well, I think of them.”
She is sure the young man had no idea how much his kindness meant to her. “He probably doesn’t even remember it,” she said. Which may be the lesson. Whenever you say something to a person — cruel or kind — you have no idea how long the words will stay with them. She is back in Japan. But still she hears those four simple words: You can do that.
66. When Atsuko went to the US, she found ________. A. people were living quite an easy life B. life was different from that in the text hooks C. people seemed unhappy and lonely D. her dream world was waiting for her 67. The instructor asked Atsuko to hit the ball to the others so that ________. A. she could not feel lonely anymore B. the others would not laugh at her C. they could get a good skill practice D. she would not fail it on the team 68. A young man came over and said four words to her because ________. A. four words were easy to remember B. it was hard for her to understand more words C. nobody else was willing to help her D. he knew she needed to be encouraged 69. We learn from the reading that ________.
A. things are always going on with Atsuko in Japan B. Atsuko has no connections with the young man today C. Atsuko went to the US when she was 27
D. the young man knew the four words would mean a lot to Atsuko 70. What is the best title of the reading? A. Young Man On the Team B. Atsuko’s Life in the US C. You Can Do That D. Hard Physical Education
