Golden Rooster Award is one of the most three important awards in the film field, set in 1981, the year of rooster in Chinese lunar calendar, so the name was decided on Golden Rooster Award. The award is conducted by China Film Association and China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the awards committee contains the most authoritative people in each fields such as artists, directors, playwright,photographers and so on. We usually call it expert award for the film and every aspects relevant should satisfy the professional and critical commands. It is an important difference compared with the Hundred Flower Award. The Golden Rooster Award is the most professional award in Chinese mainland, the Hong Kong Film Award, the Golden Horse Award in Taiwan and this Award are called three awards in Chinese film.

Just like the traditional Chinese idiom says that \"rise up upon hearing the crow of aromatherapy and practice with the sword\progress and keep forward, and the trophy, a gold-plated copper rooster, represents the same willing to the prize winner and everyone. So the principles of selection are scientific,

contending,democracy. The judges must be honest and rigorous about their right to vote to the films truly worth the award.

The Golden Rooster Award set nearly 20 prizes in every aspects, 5 best films in 5 styles, best actor and actress, best supporting actor and actress,best playwright,best director and several prizes on skills such as photography, music, props and so on. Sometimes to show the great

respect to someone make outstanding progress in one specialty, the award would add a special or honor prize, but a qualifications that more than two third of judges in the committee support it should be reached.

The Golden Rooster Award has a more complex selecting program than the Hundred Flowers Award due to the speciality. First, a primary group about 15 people having choosing experience or professional is build up to make a original film list containing 15 story films and 5 films other

types.After reading the recommendations from other associations and confirming the qualification, the second step goes on.In this step, all the judges express their own opinions about the films under the organization of the director of the committee. The third step is getting a short list of each prize. The committee will host a discussion of every details about the films in the original list. When one judge suggests and at least two other judges support with formal reasons, the proposal is available. At the fourth step, a secret ballot will reduce the films in the list and send the list to the public waiting for check. At last, all the judges will vote again to select the final results. The Golden Rooster Award d evelops with time goes on, the opinion of setting this award presented in 1980 and came into reality in 1981. The best editing, best sound recording, best props, best makeup and best stunt totally 5 prizes were added in 1982 and best maiden work of director was set at 1990. The best television film award extended the prizes in 2001 and Jackie Chan first Hong Kong actor won the best actor prize, since that time, everyone coming from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan can win Golden Rooster Award, enhancing the culture communication between districts.

Because the judges are selected by absolutely different ways, the Golden Rooster Award

reflects the evaluation of the professional filmmakers rather than the common people. The records has some deviation with the Hundred Flowers Award. Dr.Sun Yat-sen got 8 awards, most through all the film. Pan Hong got 4 time prize, 3 for best actress and 1 for special award that won the most prizes. Zhang Yimou keeps a record that he got 8 prizes in all, 1 for photography, 1 for best actor, 3 for best film and 3 for best director. In the 30thGolden Rooster Award, the best film was presented to the Wolf Totem , a film made by a worldwide team, because the director and most workers are foreigners but most of the actors are Chinese. It is a moving film tells us a story of killing or protecting wild wolfs in the western China. Some greedy people want to kill wolfs and leave a bad relationship between human and wolf. The film implies the human beings should protect our living environment rather than destroy it and it represents China to apply for the Oscar Award.
